Unacceptable Appointments

President Obama has appointed Alexia Kelly as the Director of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships at the Department of Health and Human Services. Kelly was the co-founder and executive director of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good (CACG), which supports reducing access to abortion care and services. While in the leadership at CACG Kelly characterized abortion to war and torture. This is not the same message the administration sent when they appointed Kathleen Sebelius!
As Catholics for Choice points out, Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for providing and expanding access to key sexual and reproductive health services. As such, we need those working in HHS to rely on evidence-based methods to reduce the need for abortion. We need them to believe in men’s and women’s capacity to make moral decisions about their own lives. Unfortunately, as seen from her work at CACG, Ms. Kelley does not fit the bill.
I am loath to compare our supposedly pro-choice President to our very anti-choice last President, however, this reminds me of Bush appointing Karoak as HHS deputy assistant secretary of population services back in 2006, an equally anti-choice appointment to what needs to be a department that serves women’s health, not chips away at it. True, it will be our saving grace, that Kathleen Sebelius is no Mike Leavitt and that Kelly must report to her, however after the Sotomayor appointment and now this, I fear in what direction our administration is heading when it comes to choice and women’s health.

Bin soeben aufgewacht und habe das Video mit Ihnen und Keith Olbermann gesehen. Ich war sehr beeindruckt. Eloquent und auf den Punkt.
Und was fuer ein charmanter Akzent!
Insbesondere die Diskussion der Medienzensur fand ich wichtig, und natuerlich die Referenz zu Deutschland.
Meine Mutter, 76, die im tiefsten Hinterland aufgewachsen war, hatte mir geschworen dass sie nichts von dem wusste was im Rest des Landes vor sich ging.
Gestern nacht, so gegen 4 Uhr morgens, als man glaubte dass die Polizei occuppySF aufbrechen wuerde, war ich dort. Ich hatte ich eine Unterhaltung mit einem 23-jaehrigen jungen Mann aus Nebraska - der wusste gar nicht wofuer die ganzen Zelte ueberhaupt da waren… klagte aber dann darueber dass er keine Arbeit findet und sich das Studium nicht leisten kann. Er war dunkelhaeutig, seine Mutter aus Aegypten und insistierte auf auslaenderfeindliche und republikanisch-kapitalistische Ideen.
Unfassbar. Traurig, wenn nicht tragisch.
Mein Vater ist heute 86. Er wurde mit 18 eingezogen und schoss sich nach mehreren Verwundungen selbst an, weil er es einfach nicht mehr ausgehalten hat. Spaeter hatt er dann den Holocaust als Luege abgelehnt.
Mittlerweile kann ich den “denial” der Menschen nachvollziehen, wenn auch nicht verstehen.
Die Gefahr darin ist erschreckend.
Es ist ungemein gefaehrlich, wie die Menschen immer wieder geblendet werden! Ich wuerde wirklich gerne einen Weg finden um ihnen sanft, aber klar und unverbluemt, einen Spiegel vorzuhalten in dem sie ihre Realitaet ohne Medienindoktrinierung erkennen.
Aber zurueck zum Thema!
Ich habe mich sehr gefreut zu sehen, dass Sie wohlauf sind. Die Bilder waren ziemlich erschreckend. Ich hoffe dass es ihnen gut geht und dass sie auch weiterhin und noch lange an das Gute im Menschen appellieren.

You are my new hero. You were born the same years as my father, and he too is an activist, albeit all the way across the US from you. I knew a little of your story before, but I just heard you on Thom Hartmann today. Thank you for fighting the good fight!
